Porsche Classic Communication Management
Porsche Classic is offering a new bit of tech - the Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) - which can be fitted into historic models. The new system can slot into the traditional 1-DIN or 2-DIN slots left by original car stereos (remember those?) and has an internal satellite navigation system, a touchscreen, DAB radio, and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
The PCCM gets two physical rotary controllers, and a touch-sensitive 3.5-inch display. Navigation is usually done with a simple arrow instruction layout, but you can get full mapping on a separate SD card, which can be ordered along with the header unit.
Apple CarPlay
Or, you can hook up your iPhone for Apple CarPlay, which of course comes with its own built-in navigation system, and there are media player options including SD card, USB, aux-in, and Bluetooth.
The 1-DIN slot version fits cars such as the 911 and the 944 from the 1960s all the way up to the end of air-cooled engine production in the 1990s. Later models of 911, and cars such as the Boxster, came with a larger 2-DIN sized stereo header, so there's a model to fit that slot too.
Bigger screen
That version comes with the same functionality, but a larger seven-inch screen, and Porsche says that the screen layout and its reactive 'haptic' buttons have been designed to blend in with the car's cabin design. It also works with the existing wiring for speakers and radio antenna, and can even work with the instrument cluster navigation display for later models.
That 2-DIN version also gets a full map sat-nav, as well as the same media player and phone connections as the 1-DIN model, but it also gets Google Android Auto connectivity, as well as Apple CarPlay.
We don't have Irish prices yet, but in the UK these new header units cost between €1,315 and €1,465 plus fitting.
