Citroen has revealed its new C5 X. A high-riding estate design puts it in a position to straddle several segments of the market, and it could even be seen as an alternative to an SUV. With an emphasis on comfort and design, the new flagship model for Citroen is due to go on sale in Ireland in the early part of 2022.
Though there will be petrol engine options, it appears that Citroen has no plans to offer a diesel version, which may frustrate business users. For those seeking lower emissions, a plug-in hybrid model with an output of 225hp and an electric driving range of more than 50 kilometres will be available. Several driver assistance features will add to the car's tech-filled nature, with an extended head-up display, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality and lane-keep assist.
Interior space and passenger comfort
Measuring in at a lengthy 4.8 metres, the Citroen C5 X is noticeably longer than the company's largest SUV, the C5 Aircross. It will sit reasonably high and run on 19-inch wheels that are more slender than usual, for economy reasons.
With the D-segment (saloon) experiencing continued contraction due to SUVs' popularity, the C5 X will come only as an estate body style. The boot measures in at 545 litres, increasing in volume to 1,640 litres when the rear seats are folded forward.
Seats and their comfort continue to be key points for Citroen, and the C5 X will include its Advanced Comfort seating. Furthermore, the car is also equipped with an 'Advanced Comfort' suspension setup that is said to deliver a supremely comfortable ride.
The interior includes some premium materials, including wood inserts across the dashboard fascia and extending into the doors. With no traditional gear selector, the centre console is uncluttered and includes plenty of physical buttons for things like climate control. Sitting atop the dashboard is a large 12-inch touchscreen that provides for a new type of infotainment system with a widget-based display and smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth and USB-C, in addition to wireless charging.
Citroen C5 X set to go on sale in early 2022
Commenting on the debut of the C5 X, Colin Sheridan, Managing Director of Citroen Ireland, said: "For generations, Citroën has been synonymous with comfort. The C5 X, as the new flagship model for the brand, now offers an industry benchmark for driver and passenger comfort. We look forward in anticipation to re-entering the D-segment with the C5 X. We expect to announce pricing and the specification line-up for this exciting new vehicle before the end of this year and look forward to first models arriving here from January 2022 in time for the 221 registration period."
