The Cupra Tavascan was first shown as a striking electric SUV at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show, and this week the company confirmed that it will enter production in 2024. Even better is that the design has seen little change as it moves towards production.
It will be available as a five-seat SUV with a rakish roofline and a front end that is similar to that of its smaller sibling, the Cupra Born. A new triple headlight arrangement differs from the original show car's style and forms what will become a family look across the Cupra range.
Cupra, Skoda or Volkswagen?
While a full set of technical details are still to be announced, the Tavascan is expected to use the same MEB platform as the Skoda Enyaq iV Coupe and Volkswagen ID.5. The modular underpinnings will enable Cupra to offer a 77kWh battery from the outset with an expected driving range of around 500 kilometres. There is also the possibility of a more affordable 58kWh version to follow later on. Continuing improvements to the MEB platform will benefit the Tavascan, which could have up to 200kW rapid charging by the time it goes on sale.
A rear-wheel-drive setup is a given with a 204hp output, though a dual-motor version with at least 299hp would match the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX and Skoda Enyaq iV Coupe RS. Cupra may even go one step further and increase its power output to give the sporty brand an edge over its siblings, something that it already does with the Born by offering a Performance Pack.
Tavascan gets unique cabin
The interior of the Tavascan is radically different to those of other Volkswagen Group models. Some of the core essentials are the same, such as a small digital instrument display and a larger free-standing touchscreen, but a two-tone dashboard features the brand's signature copper colour and is more organically shaped, flowing into a centre console that houses cupholders and storage.
The Tavascan will help Cupra to expand into new markets globally. A company source told CompleteCar.ie that the Tavascan will be produced in China and that its introduction will coincide with the brand's expansion into one of the world's largest car markets.
It is expected to go on sale in Ireland before the end of 2024.
