Lamborghini teases Huracan Sterrato

Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato teased in preview video.

Lamborghini has released a new teaser video showing its new off-road-oriented Huracán Sterrato in action ahead of its official unveiling on November 30.

While the car in the video (entitled “Beyond the Concrete”) still wears a camouflage wrap, nearly all of the Sterrato’s stand-out features are clearly visible, including its slightly raised ride height, chunkier tyres than usual, roof rack, plastic cladding and rally-style front spotlights. In short, beyond Lamborghini's actual SUVs and off-roaders, the current Urus and LM002 of the late eighties is unlike any Lamborghini road car that has gone before it.

Safari-inspired

The new video shows the Sterrato tacking loose sandy and gravel surfaces - apt, given that its name means "dirt road" in Italian. With a two-inch lift in ride height over its other Huracán siblings, the Sterrato is similar in concept to the Porsche 911 Dakar due to be fully revealed later this week.

The Sterrato seems to be inspired by a bevvy of "Safari" concepts and one-off builds in recent years, which have seen sports cars and supercars endowed with longer springs, off-road tyres, spotlights and roof racks, all seemingly drawing their inspiration from old rally cars from the sixties, seventies and eighties which were beefed-up to tackle arduous rallies such as the Safari Rally in Kenya and the Paris-Dakar. Most have drawn widespread acclaim from enthusiast communities.

V10's last hurrah

The Sterrato is a landmark car for Lamborghini in more ways than one. The new Huracán variant represents the final outing for the company's ageing V10 engine, a thirsty 5.2-litre brute of a powertrain that made its first appearance back in 2003 and which also sees use in the Audi R8. The Sterrato will, thus, be the last new Lamborghini not to feature some form of electrification as evolving emissions rules close the door on naturally-aspirated engines such as the V10 in favour of smaller hybrid-assisted engines and fully-electric drivetrains. The Huracán's replacement is due to be powered by a twin-turbo hybrid-assisted V8.

As last hurrahs go, it's a good one: the Sterrato will likely feature the 640hp version of the engine (developing 565Nm of torque) as seen in the Huracán LP 640-2 STO. However, that remains to be fully confirmed, as do nearly all of the Sterrato's other technical details, such as whether it will actually feature all-wheel-drive.

Those details will be revealed when the Sterrato is fully unveiled at the Art Basel event in Miami on November 30.
