Peugeot has no hope of drawing attention to its new 508 RXH in Frankfurt, as alongside it will sit this, the stunning HX1 concept car.
In fairness, the HX1's mechanicals are based on those of the RXH's, as it's powered by a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain. A 2.2-litre HDi turbodiesel sits under the bonnet and sends power to the front wheels, while an electric motor is responsible for the rears. This system, called HYbrid4, made its debut on the Peugeot 3008 crossover and endows the concept with four-wheel drive capability, as well as the option to drive on electric power alone. Maximum combined power is 303hp so it's no slouch.
Unlike Peugeot's production version of the HYbrid4 technology, the HX1 can be plugged into the mains to charge up its battery pack. That means an extended electric-only range of 30 kilometres. Peugeot reckons the HX1 will use just 3.2 litres/100 kilometres (88.2mpg) on the combined cycle and emit just 83g/km of CO2. Those impressive figures are also thanks to the concept's low (0.28) coefficient of drag.
In fact, aerodynamics is a major focus of attention, with active components throughout the car. The photographs show a rear spoiler that rises up automatically, while the wheels 'grow' elements to reduce drag further.
Access to the six-seat cabin is via four reverse opening doors. Peugeot calls the layout '4+2', indicating that the rearmost seats are best used for kids. The detailing in the cockpit is sublime, with sculpted wood door panels, loads of leather and minimal switchgear visible.
Don't expect anything like the HX1 concept to appear in your local Peugeot dealer any time soon, but it should influence the marque's designs as it moves forward.
