Automobili Pininfarina, the Italian styling house that now builds high-end electric hypercars, has revealed a new model at Monterey Car Week in California, called the B95. The new car is based on the Battista electric GT (and hence shares plenty with the Rimac Nevera), but features bespoke hand-crafted bodywork in an open barchetta design.
That means there's no roof (not even a folding top) while the car's design is said to be a timeless interpretation of the open-topped sports car. The B95 name comes from the B for barchetta and 95 marking the anniversary that Pininfarina reaches in 2025, which is when the car is expected to be delivered to customers. Only 10 B95s will be built and with a price of €4.4 million, exclusivity is guaranteed.
1,900hp, over 300km/h
Under the skin, the B95 uses the same powertrain as the Battista. That means there's a large 120kWh battery mounted in a 'T' shape in the carbon-fibre floor, and this powers four electric motors, one for each wheel. Peak power for the B95 is rated at 1,900hp, while 0-100km/h takes 2.0 seconds and there's a top speed "in excess of 300km/h".
Charging rates are equally speedy, with a maximum DC input of 270kW accepted, which can take the battery from 20 to 80 per cent capacity in less than half an hour.
Torque vectoring helps to get the power to the road, and there are five driving modes to choose from - Calma, Pura, Energica, Furiosa and Carattere - selected via a rotary dial in the cockpit.
That interior will be entirely configurable by the 10 lucky customers, and for Monterey Car Week the display model showcases what's possible. Tan leather is wrapped around the carbon-shelled seats, doors and across the dashboard, while special houndstooth fabric has been applied to the headrests.
Helmets optional
The B95 doesn't have a windscreen, but Pininfarina has fitted a pair of polycarbonate wind deflectors ahead of the cockpit that are electrically adjustable to smooth airflow over the driver and passenger. If that sounds too comfortable, then the company will offer the option of adding helmets to match the final colour scheme any owner chooses.
For the show car, the bodywork is finished in metallic bronze with gold metalflake to help the paintwork pop. The nose and twin buttresses behind the cockpit are finished in gloss yellow, but again, buyers will be able to specify their own exterior colour scheme. Slender light bars front and rear are fitted, and there's plenty of exposed carbon fibre on display. Lightweight forged alloy wheels measuring 20 and 21 inches front and rear complete the look.
Speaking at the car's reveal, Pininfarina Chairman Paolo Pininfarina said: “The B95 is elegant, bold, beautiful and innovative. Everything that defines a true Pininfarina design. It will be the perfect celebration of the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina, and will deliver a statement of intent for Automobili Pininfarina as it develops an incredible portfolio of new luxury electric cars."
The B95 was shown at Monterey alongside the Battista Edizione Nino Farina and Pura Vision design concept, the latter sharing its design theme with the barchetta.
