New Tesla Model 3 Project Highland revealed

The new Tesla Model 3 Project Highland gets more range and improved quality.

Tesla has launched a heavily updated Model 3, known as the 'Project Highland' model - one that both Tesla fans and more mainstream EV buyers have much anticipated. The big news here is that there are revised aerodynamics, improved cabin quality (so we are told), and, most importantly, more range.

Better aerodynamics

The new Model 3, as Tesla points out, is still recognisably a Model 3, but the styling at the front is definitely different. It's smoother, and the headlights have become flatter and slimmer. Combined with new aero-optimised wheels and tyres, Tesla has been able to trim the 3's drag coefficient from 0.23Cd to 0.21Cd, a very impressive figure.

That lower drag figure equals more range. The most affordable, rear-wheel drive Model 3 will now go for a claimed 554km between charges, while the four-wheel drive Long Range version can now manage a claimed 679km. Of course, given that Tesla generally improves its cars' ranges via regular over-the-air software updates, you can expect those ranges to stretch further still, meaning that we are probably not far away from a 700km capable Model 3.

The cabin is largely unchanged in an aesthetic sense, but there have been a number of detail changes, including a claimed boost in quality thanks to: "premium materials (real aluminium, textiles, etc.) and elevated levels of execution." The 15.4-inch touchscreen stays, albeit with a slimmer surround, but there's still no instrument panel for the driver nor any sign of a heads-up display (HUD).

No column stalks

The doors have been altered - partially to account for new side-impact crash regulations - while Tesla has also updated the rubber door seals and added double-glazed side glass, which it is claimed makes the cabin quieter than ever.

The biggest interior change is the deletion of the column stalks, which previously handled wipers and lights, and gear selection. You now choose from Drive and Reverse on the touchscreen, and Tesla claims that its "Smart Shift automatically selects the correct driving direction to start your trip."

Controls for indicators, wipers, and lights are now on the steering wheel, which uses a combination of physical switches and haptic touchpads.

Touchscreen in the back

In the back, rear seat passengers now get an eight-inch infotainment and climate control screen, while the back seats are now heated, and the front seats get cooling ventilation. There's a new 17-speaker audio system, two wireless phone charging pads, plus three high-power 65-watt USB-C sockets.

What don't we know yet about this 'Project Highland' update? Well, we don't know the price for these new models. It's likely that they'll be slightly more expensive than the current versions, but given Tesla has slashed prices for both the Model 3 and Model Y in recent months, those prices still should not be overly high. The first of the revised Model 3s should start to land in Ireland and the rest of Europe from the new year, but again that's TBC. Tesla has also not yet revealed revised performance and range figures for the Performance Model 3.

According to Tesla, "This update brings more refinement, comfort and 'premiumness' - inside and out - while staying true to its sleek, uncluttered design aesthetic. We have not departed from what made Model 3 a global best-seller: delivering great range and efficiency with sports-car performance and handling at an approachable price point."
