Check your brakes says the AA

The latest tip from the AA to prepare for winter driving is to ensure your car's brakes have been serviced and work correctly.

The AA is encouraging motorists to get their brakes checked before the winter weather arrives.  Last winter patrols attended more than 600 vehicles with brake problems.

Warning signs to notice include scraping or squeaking noises when applying the brakes, the need for excessive braking pressure and pulling to the left or right when braking.  Don't wait for the brake warning light to come on, is the AA's advice.

When inspecting the brakes a competent mechanic should look at a number of things including the fluid level in the master cylinder - something all motorists should check regularly.  The rest of the system might need a ramp to check; including the condition of the brake lines, hoses, pads and disks.  The AA points out that its Car Service checks all these items.

Another area that should not be overlooked is the brake fluid.  This absorbs water over time, which can cause rust and damage anti-lock braking components.  Manufacturers generally recommend getting the brake fluid flushed and replaced every two to three years.

To reduce wear on braking components the AA suggests gradual braking is better than sudden, firm pressure on the pedal.  The AA has more winter driving tips at www.aaireland.ie/wintertips.
