Petrolheads of the world rejoice. Honda has officially announced that it will unveil a NSX concept at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. Said to showcase the 'styling direction for the next generation of Acura's (Honda's American division) super sports car' the new model is being developed due to Honda president Takanobu Ito's belief that the manufacturer needs a 'halo car' to bring back the glory days enjoyed when Honda churned out Type Rs, S2000s and the original, Ayrton Senna developed, NSX supercar.
Details are scarce but the new NSX is expected to be powered by a hybrid powertrain comprising of a 3.5-litre, 400hp mid-mounted V6 petrol engine and a pair of 20kW electric motors on the rear wheels offering torque vectoring capabilities. The NSX concept is also set to gain Honda's latest Super-Handling-All-Wheel-Drive-System (SH-AWD).
Of course we have been here before. Honda unveiled the HSC (Honda Sports Concept) at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show and teased us with talk of a 4.5-litre V10 engine but binned the idea when the global economy collapsed. Here's hoping the new NSX makes production this time.
