Fiat and Mazda have announced that a "non-binding Memorandum of Understanding " has been signed between the two manufacturers that could result in an Alfa Romeo roadster based on the underpinnings of the next generation Mazda MX-5.
The deal, similar to the GT 86/BRZ one struck between Toyota and Subaru, will mean the as-yet-unnamed Alfa Romeo will be built alongside the MX-5 at Mazda's plant in Hiroshima, but will employ its own design language and powertrain options. Crucially, both cars will be "lightweight, rear-wheel drive, two-seater vehicles" giving the Italian marque its first affordable rear-drive roadster since the Spider that Dustin Hoffman drove in "The Graduate."
In a joint press release issued by the manufacturers Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat, said "This agreement clearly demonstrates our commitment to Alfa Romeo and the determination to grow it into a truly global brand. By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition."
Production of the new Alfa Romeo is expected to commence in 2015 with a commitment between Alfa and Mazda to discuss further opportunities for cooperation.
