For almost as long as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has been around a GT3 version has been offered for gentlemen racers with deep pockets to race in FIA-sanctioned events. More than just a marketing exercise for the first AMG-built supercar however, the technology used in the GT3 version of the SLS has now trickled down to the road cars with the introduction of the SLS AMG GT.
The new car will be available in both gull-winged coupé and rag-top roadster forms with both cars boasting a fettled engine, reworked transmission and new suspension. The engine is the same, hand built, 6.3-litre V8 as used in the regular SLS AMG but with a 20hp increase making for 591hp and 650Nm of torque. To go with the extra power, the GT's seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission has been recalibrated for faster shifts when "M" manual mode is engaged. The result is a new 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 317km/h.
New performance tuned electronically-adjustable dampers have been fitted to the SLS's twin aluminium wishbone setup to form the new AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension. Compared with the sports suspension fitted to the standard car the new system features stiffer spring and damper tuning and dispenses with "Comfort" mode.
To set the GT apart from the regular SLS it has been fitted with darkened lights, unique 20-inch wheels and red-painted brake calipers. Gloss black paint has been applied to elements such as the air intakes and wing mirrors, which can be specified in carbon fibre if you wish, while "GT" badging on the boot should ensure that no one mistakes it for the regular model.
The SLS AMG GT will go on sale in October, though no right-hand drive pricing has been announced as yet.
