What's the news?
Mere days after Skoda revealed first detail of its new Rapid saloon, sister brand SEAT has unveiled its version of the car that will sit between the Ibiza and Leon in the Iberian manufacturer's line-up. The new Toledo will launch in Ireland before the end of 2012, with a starting price in the region of €18,000.
Exterior
While the basic shape of the Toledo is much the same as that of the Skoda Rapid there are enough differences for this not to be a simple case of badge engineering. The styling is an amalgamation of current SEAT design language with the headlights clearly inspired by those of the face-lifted Ibiza and the front grille a miniaturised version of that worn by the Exeo. Certain elements such as the door creases and rear end treatment can also trace their lineage to SEAT concept cars such as the IBE, IBX and IBL.
Interior
As standard the Toledo will feature a full complement of airbags, as well as central locking, a two-piece folding rear backrest and electric front windows. Higher specification Reference and Style versions will add equipment such as heated seats, air conditioning and a central colour screen infotainment system that are shown in accompanying images.
Mechanicals
While Skoda was noticeably coy about the mechanicals of the Rapid, SEAT has sort of given the game away with a full disclosure of engines. A 1.2-litre 75hp TSI engine will serve as the entry-level while the diesel alternative is made up of a 1.6-litre TDI unit offering 105hp with - what SEAT claims - is class leading emissions of 104g/km. This will be joined later in the year by a 90hp variant.
Anything else?
The Toledo will initially be launched on the Spanish, Portuguese and Irish markets in mid-November 2012, with Europe-wide sales beginning in 2013. SEAT is pushing the value for money aspect as the main string in the Toledo's bow as it attempts to woo buyers that would usually consider larger saloons.
