Full details of the new, 5.5-litre, twin-turbocharged Mercedes CL 63 AMG have been released.
It uses the new bi-turbo, direct-injection, 5.5-litre V8 engine. Thanks to sophisticated fuel injection, 'intelligent' generator management and a start-stop function it promises to be cleaner and more economical than the outgoing model. As standard this engine develops 544hp, though there is an optional AMG Performance Package that lifts power to 570hp.
The power is transmitted through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed sports transmission. Rather than a conventional torque converter this uses a wet clutch for improved efficiency. In its most economical mode the transmission starts the car in second gear and shifts up as early as possible.
Claimed performance figures for the CL in standard form and with the Performance Package are 0-100km/h in 4.5 and 4.4 seconds respectively; top speed is limited to either 250- or 300km/h. The combined cycle fuel consumption is 10.5 litres/100km with CO2 emissions of 244g/km.
Backing up the CL's straight line performance is variable-ratio Direct-Steer, which is intended to make the steering more responsive. The Electronic Stability Program boasts 'Torque Vectoring Brake', which briefly applies the brakes on the inner rear wheel to help the car around tight corners.
The new model can be identified by 'V8 Biturbo' lettering on the front wings. Inside, the steering wheel has been restyled with aluminium shift paddles and perforated Nappa leather grips. Customers can personalise their CL with a variety of AMG extras including carbon trim and double-spoke alloy wheels in place of the standard triple-spoke items.
The updated CL 63 AMG will go on sale before the end of 2010.
