BMW Zagato Roadster unveiled

Second Zagato BMW concept adds fuel to fire of limited production run.

What's the news?
BMW and coach-maker collaborate once again, this BMW Zagato Roadster debuting at Pebble Beach just six weeks after the revealing of the well-received Coupé concept. Conceived, designed and built in record time, the Roadster is a running model too, which Zagato describes as 'demanding to be driven'.

Exterior
Losing its roof has obvious consequences for Zagato's trademark double-bubble roof treatment, but it's hinted at in the boot lid's contours. Zagato's typically sharp lines are also apparent in the flanks, with a pronounced line over the rear haunches and assertive detail running from behind the front lights and over the rear wing. The black tail treatment and Zagato's take on BMW's kidney grille with Z-shaped mesh and dramatic lines follow its Coupé sibling's lead, though the Roadster's rear is arguably better proportioned thanks to the loss of its roof.

Interior
No real surprises inside, though obviously Zagato's 'Z' is evident stitched into the headrests on the seats. Predominantly black, with contrasting brown leather circling the cabin, the Zagato's interior is neat and typically BMW functional, though the screen for the iDrive is a pop-up item from the dash top. Brushed metal adds some drama, but it's otherwise very restrained - and looks virtually ready for production.

Mechanicals
Power for this hand-built Zagato vision of the Z4 is powered by the gutsiest engine in the range - a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder unit. Like the bodywork and interior, it has been fettled, with power increased to around 400hp thanks to a revised exhaust and turbocharging.

Anything else?
Officially just one of a pair of projects between Italian coachbuilder and BMW the Roadster is likely to bow out and spend its time collecting dust in a collection somewhere. A limited run could be made if interest is high enough, so if you like the idea of it best get in touch with BMW - though expect your chequebook to take a hammering if it gets the go ahead.
