What's the news?
Volkswagen will launch its latest open-topped Beetle at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Harking back to the success of the original model that sold 330,000 units between 1949 and 1980, the new version sports classic styling cues alongside modern detailing.
Exterior
The convertible Beetle comes with a more heavily raked windscreen and a flatter roofline than its predecessor; but features the bumpers, lights and alloy wheel designs from the current hardtop version. The traditional soft-top opens and closes in around 10 seconds and works up to speeds of 50km/h. Like the current model, the roof sits on top of the boot-lid when retracted and a soft-top cover comes as standard.
Interior
Inside you'll find very similar features to that of the hardtop variant; with a large circular instrument panel and retro switchgear throughout. No word has been given regarding different trim levels as yet.
Mechanicals
From launch, the Beetle Cabriolet will share the seven engine options from the standard model. The entry-level 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine is available in both standard and BlueMotion guise joining the 1.4-litre TSI and 2.0-litre petrol units. Also in the range are the 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines - the former also available with BlueMotion technology.
On the safety front, an active rollover protection system has been developed by Volkswagen in the event of a rollover collision. The system features two extendable units hidden behind the rear bench seat, activating in a matter of milliseconds when the central airbag system is triggered.
Anything else?
The latest model is available to order from early 2013, though prices have yet to be confirmed. Indeed, it's possible that Volkswagen Ireland won't offer the Beetle Cabriolet for sale at all.
