Honda reveals future hybrid plans

Three distinct hybrid systems in the pipeline from Honda.

Honda has released details of its lightweight, compact, one motor hybrid drive system for small vehicles.  Called the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive system it is the latest addition to the company's Earth Dreams Technology series of new generation powertrain technology.  There are two other petrol-electric drivelines in the pipeline too: Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi Mode Drive and Sport Hybrid Super Handling - All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).

The Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive system uses a 1.5-litre, Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, high-output electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.  Pure electric running is possible at low speeds and the motor also provides regenerative braking.  A combination of petrol and electric power is claimed to provide sporting acceleration.

Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi Mode Drive is designed for mid-sized vehicles.  It uses a 2.0-litre engine, two electric motors and a CVT with lock-up clutch.  Capable of working as a plug-in hybrid the Accord for the North American market will use this drive system.

Finally, Sport Hybrid SH-AWD uses three electric motors in combination with a seven-speed DCT gearbox and 3.5-litre V6 engine.  Each rear wheel is driven by its own electric motor, allowing drive to be adjusted independently; more torque can be applied to the outer wheel to help the car around corners.  Honda also claims that the drive system provides the acceleration of a V8 engine with the economy of a four-cylinder unit.

The hybrid transmissions are described as highlighting Honda's commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles.  It is working on making Sports Hybrid vehicles, including the new NSX, a reality.
