What's the news?
The updated Opel Astra has landed in Ireland, now available in saloon form as well as the usual hatchback, Sports Tourer and GTC variants. The fourth-generation Astra was the last time we saw the car in saloon guise.
Exterior
The latest model features many of the styling cues found on the GTC model. The front grille is split like the GTC's and the lower grille has been made more prominent. The standard-fit halogen headlights now feature black detailing inside and LED daytime lights are available too. A new rear bumper with a freshly designed number plate holder helps give the car width round the back.
Sport model Astras get 17-inch alloy wheels as standard; however, 18- and 19-inch designs are available optionally.
Interior
Apart from the three-door GTC, all Astras come with ergonomic seats; and Opel has used a host of new materials to create a sportier atmosphere inside. The company has also loaded the Astra with gadgets. Toys on offer include Traffic Sign Assistant (TSA II), adaptive cruise control with automatic collision imminent braking, a rear view camera and parking assist.
Mechanicals
Nine engines are initially on offer; of which saloon models can be had with two petrol and three diesel units. The diesel of choice will inevitably be the 1.7-litre CDTi ecoFLEX, offering 110- or 130hp, and returning economy and emissions figures of 63.5mpg (4.4 litres/100km) and 99g/km respectively - making it the most fuel-efficient Astra ever according to Opel.
Anything else?
The new Astra range starts at €18,995, with the saloon - dubbed 'the Insignia's baby brother' - coming in at €19,495. All versions are available across Ireland now.
