BMW previews LA Auto Show

Loads of interesting metal from BMW in LA, but any surprises?

The Los Angeles International Auto Show is just over a week away and BMW has revealed some of its line-up.  Highlights include the Concept K2 Power Ride, i8 Concept Roadster and hybrid versions of the 3 and 5 Series.  The show opens on 28th November.

Inspired by snowboarding company K2 the Concept K2 Power Ride is based on the BMW X1.  Finished in orange with graphics that are supposed to represent the stylised image of a fox the car features a roof rack to carry snowboards and skis.  The suspension has been raised and there are 19-inch alloy wheels too.  A Harman Kardon sound system is installed in the boot for impromptu parties after a day's skiing.  Coinciding with the concept is the BMW X1 Power Ride Edition; available this winter in the USA it also features unique graphics and a roof mounted ski box.

The BMW i8 Concept Roadster is making another show appearance, having been seen earlier this year in Beijing.  No changes have been made to the concept with its upward swivelling doors and plug-in hybrid driveline.  With a total system output of 354hp available BMW claims 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds and fuel consumption of 3.0 litres/100km (94mpg).

Continuing the petrol-electric theme are the BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid and 5 Series ActiveHybrid.  Both models feature a 300hp, six-cylinder engine and 55hp electric motor.  Management of the hybrid system allows the cars to run just on electric power for urban journeys.  Other fuel-saving strategies include a coasting mode that enables the petrol engine to be switched off and disconnected at speeds of up to 160km/h.

Both the new M5 saloon and M6 Coupé will be at the show as well as the 650i Gran Coupé.
