Porsche Macan heads new model blitz

Teaser picture of new Porsche Macan SUV previews busy show season.

What's the news?
Even though 2013 is drawing to a close, Porsche is wasting no time is setting out its stall for 2014 with plans to unveil three new models at the remaining big motor shows of the year. The first of which will be the Los Angeles Auto Show, which will see the first public unveiling of an entirely new model for the Stuttgart company - the Macan - on the eve of the show on 19 November.

The Macan is a new compact SUV, a baby brother to the Cayenne if you will, and will further add to the massive increase in planned production units. It will face competition from already established rivals such as the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and if it can replicate the success that the Cayenne managed then it should be a big hit, further demonstrating Porsche's status as much more than just a sports car maker.

Also appearing at the Los Angeles show will be two new versions of the 911 - the 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. The standard 911 Turbo Cabriolet develops 520hp from its 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged engine, while the more powerful S version produces 560hp.

The following day on 20 November on the other side of the globe, Porsche will debut the latest version of the Panamera Turbo S alongside a new longer wheelbase model called the Executive. This 570hp luxury saloon has a top speed of 310km/h and is the most powerful car in the Panamera range. The Executive version sees the wheelbase grow by 15 centimetres offering even more comfort for rear passengers, although Porsche claims that the added length doesn't detract from the overall driving experience.

Along with all that there's the debut of the 918 Spyder in certain countries. This new hybrid supercar will have a joint-launch between the Los Angeles and Guangzhou in China, and will take over from where the Carrera GT left off. The innovative new supercar will come in two guises, the latter of which features the Weissach package that boosts performance even further by reducing the car's overall weight - among other things.

Anything else?
Thanks to the 918 Spyder's plug-in hybrid system it lays claim to combined fuel consumption figure of just 3.0 litres/100km and an overall CO2 emissions rating of 70g/km giving it (on paper at least) better environmental credentials than the latest Toyota Prius. It will, however, cost substantially more.
