The 6 Series is about to get a new lease of life, as BMW will unveil a concept coupé version at the Paris Motor Show later this month.
The German firm is remaining tight-lipped about the specifics, but a picture tells a thousand words and it's the styling that will be the talk of the show. There's still a big nod to the outgoing 6 Series with the concept's trapezoidal headlamps and long bonnet, but it's also a lot more up-to-date.
From the side, the bodywork appears quite busy. Flared wheelarches, a low, raked roof and numerous sweeping lines along the flanks make it a captivating thing to behold. That's even truer of the rump, which is eerily triangular and has a hint of DeLorean about it.
Inside, the centre console appears to follow BMW tradition in its functional appearance, but the designers have obviously been let off the reigns elsewhere. The sculpted centre section on the passenger side of the cabin is truly lovely, while the 10.2-inch flat screen iDrive display is equally impressive.
What we do know about the 6 Series coupé is that it will be a 2+2, so it's likely to go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and other luxury coupés.
LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels and a Bang and Olufsen sound system are also confirmed for the concept, but we're left to imagine the juicy details about engines and transmissions.
From the looks of the gear shifter in the cabin, we'd bank on the firm's eight-speed automatic gearbox, probably mated to large six- and eight-cylinder engines - maybe even a hybrid. We'll know more on September 29, when the wraps come off the show car in Paris.
