Armour-plated Audi A8, sir?

If you must have armour plating on your limo, check out Audi's new A8 L Security.

What's the news?
The Audi A8 can now be specified as a high security vehicle with the launch of the A8 L Security. Based on the long wheelbase version of the standard A8, the Security adds a multitude of reinforcements, technology and plating to keep its occupants as safe as possible in the most hostile of situations.

Exterior
Visually, the A8 L Security is identical to the latest A8; however, under the skin it's a different story entirely. Designed with a high security version in mind from the outset, the hand-built, reinforced aspects of the car make it the lightest luxury, high-security saloon in the world according to Audi. Tested under the BRV 2009 guidelines, the A8 can withstand firing from NATO sub-calibre ammunition, with other areas able to take even more punishment. The armour-plated floor will protect occupants from military-grade hand grenades and passengers will even walk out alive from an attack involving explosive charges. The A8 L Security comes equipped with 19-inch forged alloy wheels too, featuring polymer rings on the outer edges to allow the car to be driven with a puncture.

Interior
Inside, the security gadgetry keeps on coming. Fitted to all examples of the A8 L Security is a secured communications box in the boot. This is highly armour plated and contains all the controls for the electronics and communication features on board. Communication includes a standard-fit loudspeaker system that resonates outside the car via the front grille. Optional security equipment inside includes an emergency exit system that, in essence, blows the doors off, along with an automatic fire extinguisher system, emergency fresh air system, a smoke extractor, individually unlocking doors and an accident data recorder.

However, let us not forget that the A8 is still a luxury saloon; and there is as much available on the comfort front as there is in terms of protection. The back of the car contains two electrically-operated seats as opposed to a bench, which can be enjoyed with the optional twin 10.2-inch displays, a folding table and cool box. Up front, the electric seats come with the option of a massage function; with the passenger's featuring a footrest as well. Also inside is a four-zone climate control system, Bose surround sound, electric rear blinds, MMI Navigation and the Parking System Plus with surround view camera.

Mechanicals
The Audi A8 L Security can be specified with either the 4.0-litre TFSI V8 or the 6.3-litre W12 FSI petrol engines, ensuring that power is never an issue. In its heavier, high-security guise the A8 can still accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds with the W12 engine fitted; and keep accelerating up to its limited top speed of 209km/h - certainly not the fastest car in the world, but quick enough for an armoured vehicle. In addition, the car's chassis, brakes and electronic aids have been modified to handle the model's extra bulk.

Anything else?
The Audi A8 L Security can be ordered now, with deliveries starting in the autumn. The high-security model can also be ordered to specification; and special driver training is offered to prospective buyers, too.
