What's the news?
In-car connectivity is the latest thing - allowing internet access on the move - and Volkswagen has opened a whole new division to develop the technology. The automotive giant has taken over BlackBerry's European research and development facility in Bochum, Germany.
Known as Volkswagen Infotainment GmbH, the new arm gives Volkswagen access to in-house expertise in connectivity technology. According to Volkswagen the future will see communication between vehicles and infrastructure and even car-to-car. This will provide drivers with better information about traffic delays, available parking and other information.
Dr Heinz-Jakob Neußer, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for the Development Division, explained: "Connectivity will be a key feature of the car of the future. Many customers are expecting connected vehicles of a new dimension in terms of convenience and road safety. Around the globe, our customers' aspirations will change rapidly, leading to shortened cycles of innovation for systems and functions. In order to be able to meet these challenges it is necessary for us to broaden and expand our options through additional know-how."
Anything else?
Taking over BlackBerry reduces Volkswagen's dependence on outside suppliers to support connectivity technologies. It remains to be seen how Volkswagen will attempt to reconcile the rapid changes in mobile technology with the longer life expectancy of a car.
