What's the news?
BMW has announced that it is recalling approximately 1.6 million examples of the 3 Series manufactured between May 1999 and August 2006, 8,500 of which were sold in Ireland. The recall is a precautionary measure relating to a potential issue with the passenger airbag not opening properly.
Some 240,000 of the 1.6 million cars being recalled have an airbag fitted that was manufactured by a third-party supplier, Japanese company Takata. This firm has also had problems with other car manufacturers that it supplies airbags to.
Anything else?
It is worth highlighting that this is a precautionary recall, and thus far it is not known to be an issue. However if you own a BMW 3 Series that you think was manufactured during the affected dates, it is worth contacting your local BMW dealer to arrange an appointment. As is usually the case with this precautionary measures, it will be cost-free for the consumer and shouldn't take too long to have checked.
