What's the news?
We all know the new Volvo XC90 is a stunning, luxurious machine and that the Swedes have already whipped the covers off the Excellence model - only four seats but the back two are massaging chairs - at the Shanghai Motor Show, but here's yet another sumptuous take on the big SUV: the Lounge Console concept.
By junking the front passenger seat and replacing it with the Lounge Console, it turns the XC90 into a busy executive's haven from the stresses of fast-paced business life. Or something. Essentially, the large work table alongside the chauffeur (natch) houses an illuminated vanity mirror, a storage tray for jewellery and personal accessories (or make-up), a 17-inch media screen for an in-car theatre experience and an area to put your shoes underneath the cushioned leg rest. There's also a lockable box for valuables.
No word on whether this unusual, three-seat XC90 would make it into production but there's sure to be interest in it at the Shanghai show, as China is a country where sitting in ultimate luxury in the back row of seats is seen as an honour.
Anything else?
"People who are on the move and have a hectic lifestyle going from event to event or meeting to meeting need some space, some luxury time, and the opportunity to relax and refresh themselves for the next engagement. This is ultimately what the Lounge Console is designed to facilitate," said Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president for design at Volvo.
