Opel updates Mokka and adds petrol AWD option

Mokka X gets new front end and lots of high-tech equipment.

What's the news?

Now that Opel has replaced the Astra, and before the new Insignia hoves into view, there's just time for an update to the Mokka, Opel's small (and somewhat under-rated) crossover.

The Mokka X gets a new-generation 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, with 152hp. It's mated, for now, to four-wheel drive as standard and a six-speed automatic transmission. Opel quotes 6.6 litres per 100km average fuel consumption and 154g/km CO2 emissions - a figure that will probably somewhat limit the model's appeal in Ireland.

Still, you will get a lot of kit for your money. That four-wheel drive system is fully adaptive, controlled by an electro-magnetic multi-plate clutch and shunting power where it's most needed.

The Mokka X also gets (to go with its new front-end styling, including a new grille and chrome 'wing' signature) Opel's Adaptive Forward Lighting LED headlights, which can automatically shift between dipped and high beam and can switch between several pre-set modes including town light, country light, tourist mode and a curve and cornering function.

Other high tech options include traffic sign recognition, distance warning on the front, forward collision alert and lane departure warning.

The Mokka also now comes with Opel's connected OnStar system, which includes access to a call centre that can help with your queries, as well as the IntelliLink infotainment system, which comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for mobile phones. There's also keyless entry and start and specially-designed ergonomic seats certified by the AGR, Germany's Campaign for Healthier Backs.

The Mokka X will get its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and sales will start in the autumn.
