Bosch shows electric kart

New e-kart prototype by Bosch showcases electric drivetrain technology.

What's the news?

Bosch unveiled its e-kart on 21st May at the FIA Formula E Berlin ePrix. Developed in conjunction with the FIA and German Motorsport Association the driveline technology developed for the kart will also feature in road cars from 2017.

Electricity comes from a 48-volt lithium battery powering the electric motor that delivers 20kW and 300Nm. A boost recovery system (BRS) recovers energy to re-use for acceleration. Controlling the system is a custom ECU and network of sensors that manage energy flow throughout the kart. The driveline is fitted to a Mach 1 Kart chassis; in testing the prototype was reported as achieving 0-62mph in less than five seconds with a top speed over 80mph.

Anything else?

BRS is designed for compact vehicles BRS as an entry-level hybrid system. It provides up to 10kW of additional power, which is claimed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2emissions by up to 15 per cent on the road. An additional 150Nm of torque is available to assist acceleration.
