First glimpse at Mercedes-Maybach super-coupe

Super-luxury concept to be unveiled at next week’s Pebble Beach Concours.

What do we know about the Mercedes-Maybach Coupe? Almost nothing, save that it’s big. Six-metres big, which is staggeringly long for a two-door car, and harks back to the classic, and massive, Mercedes-Benz 540K coupes and convertibles of the 1930s.

Actually, the 1930s seems like it might be quite the inspiration for this new mega-Mercedes. Quite apart from it being the second stage of resurrecting the Maybach name following its ill-starred time as a stand-alone brand, the shadowy image we’ve so far seen shows a coupe of intensely sleek lines, almost a comic-book artist’s idea of what an art-deco super-coupe should look like. If it reaches production, and that is presumably the intention, it will most likely be based either on the architecture of the S-Class Coupe or the AMG-GT (which could do with some spin-off models to aid its business case) and will be a rival to the likes of the Bentley Continental GT, the Rolls-Royce Wraith and the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso.

Thus far, Mercedes will say only one enigmatic sentence about the car: “Hot & cool - Almost six metres of ultimate luxury.” As to what exactly that means and as to the further details of the car, we’ll just have to wait till later in the week for more news (more photos and a video are apparently coming soon) and the car’s full reveal at the famed and monied Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance next week.
