What are you driving?
This behemoth is the 2016 Toyota Hilux and as impressive as it might look, it has no shortage of competition. Toyota does offer a single-cab version, which starts at €29,250, but the twin-cab body style tested here is more appealing and comes in a choice of specification grades priced from €36,500. This manual SR5 version costs €39,895.
Name its best bits
Easily the most standout aspect of the new Hilux is its interior. The dashboard is shallow, which, combined with the upright windscreen, adds to the sense of space inside. All of the main controls are easily accessible too, while the seven-inch colour touchscreen has a floating appearance within the centre console.
Anything that bugs you?
One of the initial things we noticed about the Hilux is the firmness of the rear suspension in particular. It may be capable of lugging heavy loads, but it leaves it feeling overly stiff when unloaded, especially when going over speed bumps and on poorer road surfaces.
Getting in and out of the Hilux is also a bit of a pain for those of average height given how tall the cabin is and the fact that there is a sizeable sill to cross.
And why have you given it this rating?
Even though it might be a bit firm on the move, overall, Toyota has done an impressive job with this latest Hilux. The exterior styling is conservative enough while inside, the layout is more aligned to what many might expect from a family SUV, regarding quality and finish, rather than a commercial workhorse like this.
