Audi says RS 5 is the 'Gran Turismo' of RS

New Audi RS 5 coupe uses 450hp twin-turbo V6.

What's the news?

Audi is claiming that the new RS 5, revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, combines both ultra-high performance and "a high degree of everyday usability" - hence the Gran Turismo tag.

Exterior

Audi says that the chunky design was inspired by the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO racer, and it has wheelarches that are 15mm wider than the standard A5 coupe. It also gets a fixed boot spoiler, different diffuser and RS-specific oval exhaust pipes.

Interior

Inside, there are heavily-bolstered sports seats, a three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel and a special RS layout for the all-digital Virtual Cockpit instrument panel. You also get a head-up display and LED Matrix headlights.

Mechanicals

It uses a new twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6 engine developing 450hp and 600Nm of torque - 170Nm up on the old RS 5.

Audi claims a blistering 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds, and if you tick the box for the optional RS Dynamic package, then the nice guys in Ingolstadt will take off the speed limiter and let the RS 5 run on to a maximum of 280km/h.

All that oomph flows though an eight-speed automatic gearbox and, of course, quattro four-wheel drive, which is 60 per cent biased towards the rear wheels.

Anything else?

Audi is also showing off the new DTM touring car racing version of the RS 5, which gets 500hp from a 4.0-litre V8 engine, and which is said to have much better grip than before thanks to softer tyres from supplier Hankook. The new DTM racing season kicks off in May.
