Honda commits to hybrids and EVs

Japanese giant promises to play catch up with batteries in Europe.

What's the news?

Honda has claimed that, by 2025, two thirds of all the cars we buy will be electric, whether fully-electric or some form of hybrid. That's not good news for a car maker that currently has no hybrid or electric model on sale in Europe, but Honda Europe's President and COO, Katsushi Inoue, has given a promise that "we will leverage Honda's global R&D resources to accelerate the introduction of a full portfolio of advanced, electrified powertrains for the European customer."

The plans will kick in next year when Honda launches a new hybrid model featuring a twin-motor setup. The company is also committing to hydrogen fuel cell tech, showing off its latest Clarity fuel cell car in Geneva, which has a claimed 700km range on one tank of hydrogen.

Anything else?

Honda also brought along its NeuV concept electric car to the Geneva Motor Show, already shown earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Designed to be a semi-autonomous urban run-around, it uses a clever computer system that can read a driver's emotional state and help them, hopefully, to make better decisions on routes etc.
