Here's our pick of the best crossovers and mid-sized SUVs currently on sale.

The rise in popularity of crossovers and mid-sized SUVs has led to a proliferation of new models in the market. Many of these are derived from normal cars, but go beyond simply having raised height on their side. Most also offer useful all-wheel-drive options, and while you may not plan on venturing off-road it does help in wet and icy conditions. It's a terrific all-rounder proving very comfortable on longer journeys, while city driving is made even easier by an excellent nine-speed automatic transmission.

This cool-looking SUV is Toyota proving that it can do cool. Toyota hopes the C-HR will rival the likes of the Hyundai Tucson and Nissan Qashqai. Its coupe-like styling is great outside, but rear passengers will find it dark. Only petrol or hybrids are on offer, too - no diesel.
