Audi has instigated a voluntary recall for 850,000 cars worldwide running its V6 and V8 TDI diesel engines.
The move, which will affect models such as the A6, A7, A8, Q5, and Q7 amongst others, is to adjust the cars' emissions systems as investigators and officials are taking an ever-more stringent line on diesel exhausts. Cars made by Volkswagen and Porsche will also be affected.
"Audi aims to maintain the future viability of diesel engines for its customers and to make a contribution towards improving air quality," a spokesperson for the car maker said in a statement. "At the same time, Audi is convinced that this programme will counteract possible bans."
The mention of bans is, of course, a reference to expected emissions control legislation by major cities such as Paris, Madrid, and London which may seek to ban older diesel cars from urban roads, where pollution is at its highest.
Audi isn't the only one on the diesel emissions trail this week. Mercedes has recalled more than three million Diesel engined cars this week to update their emissions control software, following meetings with German government officials in Berlin.
