What's the news?
For the third year in a row, Ferrari has clinched the top prize in the International Engine of the Year Awards. It's 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which features in the 488 GTB and more recently in a higher output in the 488 Pista, won by a margin of almost 300 points, making it a clear winner in the eyes of the jury, which includes CompleteCar.ie Editor Shane O'Donoghue and Road Test Editor Dave Humphreys.
The Ferrari engine won ahead of Porsche's 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine, which ranked in second place, followed by another Ferrari power unit, its 6.5-litre V12.
That 3.9-litre V8 Ferrari engine was also named as the best engine of the last two decades in the 'Best of Best' Award, which has been created to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Engine of the Year Awards. It won ahead of close competition from a broad range of engines including Toyota's Prius hybrid, the 1.5-litre engine that features in the BMW i8 and Ford's one-litre three-cylinder.
Ferrari's dominance in this year's awards didn't end there; the Italian company also takes home silverware in the New Engine category for its 6.5-litre V12 along with the top spot in the Performance Engine and 3-Litre to 4-Litre categories.
For the first time since the diesel scandal broke, Volkswagen also won an award for one of its engines. Its 999cc TSI three-cylinder turbocharged power unit came out on top in the Sub-1-Litre category.
The awards ceramony was held in Stuttgart in Germany at Engine Expo, the exhibition dedicated to powertrain design and technologies, which is taking place until 3pm this Thursday.
Speaking at the Awards' ceremony, Dean Slavnich, co-chairman, International Engine of the Year Awards said: "With its V8, Ferrari has demonstrated that even the most discerning of car buyers want smaller, more efficient engines. Indeed, the turbocharged engine's blend of heart-thumping performance and glorious Maranello rumble has made it unbeatable not just for the past three years, but also when pitched against the best of the past two decades."
Anything else?
It wasn't just combustion engines that were recognised at the International Engine of the Year Awards. Tesla takes home awards in both the Green Engine and Electric Powertrain categories. This award marks the fifth time that Tesla has won the former category, and the second time winning the latter.
In the 1.0- to 1.4-litre category, PSA's 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine found in many Citroen and Peugeot models won, while BMW's 1.5-litre three-cylinder electric-petrol hybrid topped the 1.4- to 1.8-litre category. Porsche was awarded first place in the 1.8- to 2.0-litre category while Audi's phenomenal 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo power unit clinched the award in the 2.0- to 2.5-litre category.
