What's the news?
Automobili Pininfarina has announced that its forthcoming electric hypercar, previously codenamed PF0, will be named the Battista after the founder of Carrozzeria Pininfarina. Details of the car, which will be built in very limited numbers, have gradually been revealed, but we'll have to wait until the 2019 Geneva Motor Show to see it in its completed form.
Only 150 examples are planned as part of the production run, with each car costing between €1.7- and €2.2 million depending on exact specification. The allocation is evenly split with 50 vehicles for Europe, 50 for the United States and a further 50 going to Asia and the Middle East. Pininfarina has already held a number of special preview events for prospective buyers to see the car and talk with its designers, no doubt to explore what kind of bespoke creations could be possible.
For the project, Automobili Pininfarina is partnering with Rimac Automobili to use its expertise in electric powertrain and battery technology. Rimac will lead the mechanical development of the car which is said to deliver staggering levels of performance. With electric motors driving all four wheels, the total power output is said to be 1,900hp while the phenomenal torque output from the electric motors could be as high as 2,300Nm.
The 0-100km/h time is said to be under two seconds while its top speed will exceed 400km/h. Its all-electric drivetrain results in zero tailpipe emissions and a driving range of more than 480 kilometres. It will be compatible with the next generation of rapid chargers that are being rolled out as part of the IONITY network. These will enable owners to recharge up to 80 per cent of battery capacity in around 45 minutes.
What we've seen so far is a very sleek design with a low-drag design to help it reach that incredible top speed. A single full-width LED light stretches across the nose of the car. Two raised elements at the rear along with a substantial diffuser suggest that the car will be capable of generating vast amounts of downforce, which will be essential if it is to achieve the claimed performance targets.
