Morgan is, honestly, about to launch a new car - the Plus Six - which will make its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend. Right, I know what you're thinking; it looks just exactly the same as every other Morgan since 1804, but trust me, this one is all different underneath.
BMW straight-six engine
Out goes the old 4.4-litre BMW V8 engine of the old Plus Eight versions (and indeed of the Aero 8) and in comes the same 335hp straight-six turbo unit that you'll also find in the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra. Underneath is what Morgan calls its new 'CX' chassis which mixes cutting-edge bonded aluminium tech with a light-but-strong ash wood frame that supports the body panels. The whole chassis weighs less than 100kg.
The new Plus Six will be put through its paces by Morgan's test driver - and F3 and GT racer - Shane Kelly.
'History and evolution'
Toby Blythe, Morgan Motor Company Head of Marketing said: "It is with great pride that Morgan Motor Company can represent the history and evolution of the automobile in Britain at the nation's largest, and best loved automotive event. The Festival of Speed has become a national institution over the last quarter of a century, and we are delighted to have our newest, and most exciting sportscar going up the famed Goodwood hill.
"The Plus Six's dynamic global debut is an incredibly significant event in the 110th year of Morgan's wonderful history, and there is no greater place to present the car than the Goodwood Festival of Speed."
0-100km/h in just 4.2 seconds
That BMW engine means that the old-school looking Plus Six can sprint to 100km/h in a distinctly modern 4.2 seconds, yet the car's lightweight construction gives it CO2 emissions of just 170g/km and the potential for 38mpg fuel economy.
