What do I pay on a VAT-qualifying car?

Hello,

If I buy a VAT-qualifying car from the UK, am I correct in saying that I deduct the VRT, customs and VAT paid upon entry from the following selling price here and am then liable for Irish VAT on that figure?

E.g. SP = €20,000 - tariff €1,000 - VAT €1,230 - VRT €1,500 = €16,270 so VAT liability of €3,043?

Thanks for any clarification you can give me.

Cost to use a Transit Connect privately?

I am currently office based for work with the requirement to visit building sites from time to time. I am considering buying a Ford Transit Connect van, 1.5-litre that is more practical than my current car for visiting sites. I would therefore need the van for work and private purposes as I cannot afford to have a seperate car for private use only. What type of tax and insurance by law do I need for this scenario (private/commercial) and what would be the approx cost of same?

Thanks

Thoughts on this Audi A1 TDI?

I'm thinking of buying a 161 Audi A1 1.6 TDI with very low mileage - only around 18,000 miles done. It has had two owners, one for nearly nine months and one for six and it looks like the rest of the time it has been at a dealer's for sale. It's clean inside and comes in at €15k. Other ads for sale have much higher mileage for similar price. It looks at one stage like it has been at a dealer for nearly three years and has currently been for sale for almost a year with the dealer (from car history report). It's due an NCT and the dealer is giving six months' warranty. Is buying a car that was idle so long a good idea and does it sound too good to be true?!

Start-stop issues with my Tucson...

Hi.

I have a 2017 Hyundai Tucson and the auto stop-start button has a light on it at startup and the light on the dash is amber permanently. When I press the stop-start button nothing happens, the light remains on. None of the stop-start functions have worked for a while but I put that down to not driving a lot during lockdown. I’m now beginning to suspect there is a fault.

Can I pay the old import taxes etc. pre-2021?

Hi.

If a car was already brought into this country in November/December from the UK, will the new import duties and VAT apply when re-registering the car in Ireland or will it be under the old system as it was imported prior to December 31?

Can I get commercial tax?

I am thinking of buying a Ford Ranger. While I won't use it for work purposes, I keep horses and need a vehicle for towing. Can I get commercial tax on these grounds?

Looking at buying a 2017 BMW 330e...

Hi,

I am looking at a 2017 BMW 330e Sport. At the moment I travel 30km per day on average so expect the battery-only power to cover most of my driving outside of the weekend. Can you let me know of any issues I should be looking for with a plug-in hybrid of this year? Do you know if there are any battery life issues starting to crop up? My budget is around the €20K mark and the car is for a family of four; are there any other plug-in hybrids (saloon or SUV) I should be looking at for this budget?

Thanks, Joe

Thinking of buying an electric van...

Thinking of buying a used electric Nissan NV200 in Ireland and taxing and insuring it privately and using it as my private car for non-commercial use. Do I have to pay VAT and would it qualify for low tax?

Thanks
