Thoughts on the Subaru XV 1.6 CVT?

Hi, your good work is much appreciated.

Every so often I take it into my mind to change what is by now a seven-year-old car. And when I do, a lot of questions come to mind and so my recent questions are on long term costs of hybrids (which seem to be taking over the market) and on the Hyundai Santa Fe. The latter I wouldn't really have considered, except I was in a dealership and was very taken by it. But on mature reflection, the cost of changing simply can't be justified.

Recently I came across material on the Subaru XV 1.6, which hadn't been on my radar, but which seems on paper to have a lot going for it. But I'm rather concerned about the CVT gearbox. There's an American mechanic on YouTube, who seems very experienced, who argues that this technology has yet to prove its long term reliability and that, after 60,000 miles, they can give rise to problems. Even Toyota, with its claim to excellence, has recently done a recall in the States to replace the transmission. Secondly, also there are conflicting views on whether the engine might be described as gutless. Anyway, that's where my researches have got me and I would very much welcome your views.

Thanks in advance

Motor tax for imported Defender Utility?

Hello,

I have a Land Rover Defender 110 Utility, which is classed as a commercial vehicle in the UK with road tax of £240 a year. I use it for personal use and want to bring it home to Ireland. I've owned it for more than six months. It's in Band G for CO2 emissions so I'm horrified to see the motor tax in Ireland for it is €2,350. But, your article says if it's commercial and personal use it's a different scale. It has a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Do you know how much the tax is?

How much to tax a Fiat Scudo privately?

I brought a 2009 Fiat Scudo five-seat van from England. Roughly how much should this cost to tax as a private vehicle? Is it based on the emissions?

Do I pay VAT importing from Australia?

Hello,

I’m thinking about importing a car from Australia. I will have owned it for more than six months. I understand I’m exempt from VRT, but do I pay VAT given I’m not in EU?

Is it just €358 to tax my small van?

Hi,

I just read your article on vehicle tax in Ireland. I have a small van and was thinking of using it as my daily mode of transport. Am I correct in saying that I will only pay €358 on a 1.3-litre engine size?

I want to insure a crew cab privately. Help!

I have a crew cab. I don't have a business so I am trying to insure it for social and domenstic use only, but I am having trouble getting insurance. Insurers won't look at commercial vehicles for private use. Any companies willing to take me on?

Can I avoid VRT importing my own car?

Dear Team,

I moved to Ireland and brought my German car with me. It is a Volkswagen Caddy, built December 2014 with 115,000km reading on the clock. I had the idea of registering the car in Ireland, since I will be living permanently in Ireland for the next two years. Checking the VRT calculation online gave me a bit of a shock, since filling in the car information, as the system declared a VRT tax of €3,300. Could you please explain to me how to get around this tax? As I understood, since the car belonged to me before, it is not an import of a car (either new or used) in the normal sense?

Thanks a lot for your help

Regards

Looking for used automatic car...

Hi, I am looking for a used automatic hatchback petrol car for my wife. She's a learner and would prefer a small automatic hatchback. Would you mind helping me to find the best automatic car from year 2015 to 2017? We went through your reviews and made a list of cars thatsuits our needs. They are Hyundai i10, Skoda Citigo, Kia Picanto, Toyota Yaris, SEAT Ibiza, SEAT Mii, Opel Corsa, Peugeot 108 and Renault Clio etc. I was wondering if you could suggest me the best option?
