The Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design limited edition has been unveiled.

Hot on the heels of our first sighting of the new 992-generation 911 Targa, Porsche has taken the covers off a limited production version, the new 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design edition. It's the first of four such 'Heritage Design' cars in the pipeline (apparently previewed by the 911 Speedster) and only 992 examples will be sold to the public.

The cherry (paint) on top

The 'hero' colour for the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design edition is called Cherry Metallic red, echoing the style of the 1950s, according to Porsche (it cites three Porsche 356 red paint colours, another from the early 911 and the fact that its cars' manuals and other literature from the 1950s were produced in dark red and white). That colour contrasts with a silver Targa bar and gold-coloured logo. Indeed, gold is used on the model name script on the rear, too, while a special classic style of Porsche crest is used throughout the car.

White 'spear' graphics along the front of the 911 complement the motorsport-inspired side livery. Rather more subtle is the Porsche Heritage badge fixed to the rear grille, which harks back to an award for examples of the Porsche 356 that reached the 100,000km mark. Carrera Exclusive Design alloy wheels (20-inch front, 21-inch rear) are standard (and can indeed be ordered through the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur catalogue for any current 911), which share their five-spoke layout with the iconic Fuchs rims.

Corduroy trim FTW!

The interior gets a suitably exclusive upgrade, too, with two-tone leather (Bordeaux Red and Atacama Beige or Black and Atacama Beige) and more besides. The highlight, however, is the use of corduroy on the seats and doors, referencing the Porsche 356 once again. The rest of the cabin is thoroughly up to date, of course, though another retro touch is found in the digital dashboard, as the rev counter and stopwatch get green illumination. Finally, there's a special roof liner and a metal badge with the build number on the dashboard.

For those that want to, effectively, take a piece of their special 911 everywhere they go, Porsche Design has also produced the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design edition chronograph. It's limited to just 992 pieces and, naturally, shares its design theme with the car itself.

911 Targa 4S as just revealed

In case you missed our earlier news story, the new Porsche 911 Targa's roof panel automatically retracts in 19 seconds. All versions get PTM (Porsche Traction Management - all-wheel drive to you and me) as standard. The 911 Targa 4S uses a 450hp version of Porsche's latest twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six, enabling a 0-100km/h time of 3.6 seconds when paired with the eight-speed, dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission. Buyers can opt for a seven-speed manual gearbox instead.

More Heritage Design to come

Porsche has confirmed that the new 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design edition is the first of four such models to come, all built in limited numbers and all referencing classic Porsche design themes. Expect a hefty premium over and above the regular 911 Targa 4S's price of €185,484. If that's too much for you, or you miss out on the limited production run, fear not, as Porsche is also releasing a Heritage Design package, which can be applied to all current 911s.
