Time running out for scrappage

Customers who want to buy a new car under the Scrappage Scheme are advised by the SIMI to act fast.

Anyone thinking of trading in an old car under the Government's Scrappage Scheme has been warned not to leave it too late.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has issued a reminder that it may take several weeks to order and register new cars under the scheme.  More importantly the old car must be scrapped by 30th June.

Figures released by the SIMI show that for the year to April 7,003 claims have been made under the scheme, 2,000 more than for the same period last year.  Of that number the largest share of new cars registered belongs to Toyota with 1,572 units.  The model taking the largest portion of the market was the Yaris although the Corolla and Avensis also featured in the ten most popular models.

The Director General of the SIMI advised anyone thinking of taking advantage of the scheme: "In order to ensure customers can secure their new scrappage car of their choice, orders should be placed as early as possible."
