Peugeot 308 gets new digital instruments and new paint options.

Given the arrival of cars such as the 208, 2008, 3008, and 508, it's maybe a bit easy to forget that the Peugeot 308 - the brand's rival to the likes of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf - still even exists. It does still exist, we're happy to report, and Peugeot is giving the car a minor makeover for 2020.

Digital dials

To be honest, there are not a lot of changes here. The biggest new item is that the i-Cockpit layout (with the small wheel mounted down low and the instruments mounted up high) has been given digital dials for the first time. The main central touchscreen is also new, and now has a 'gloss' finish, which Peugeot likens to smartphones.

Dark-finished chrome

On the styling front, the headlamps have been subtly changed, and there's a new paint option - Vertigo Blue - which you'll have already seen on the smaller 208 and 2008. There are also two new alloy wheel designs from which to choose. Top-spec versions also now come with the option of a 'Black Pack' which turns all the exterior chrome to a dark finish, incorporating the front grille, the indicator and fog light surround, and side window covers. Dark-finished 18-inch alloy wheels are also fitted when you pick the Black Pack.

Safety options

Peugeot has upped the 308's safety game too, and it now comes with options that include adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam stop and go, a 180-degree rear parking camera, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keeping steering, driver attention alert, automatic high-beam assistant, speed sign recognition, and a blind-spot monitor.

The engine range is unchanged and consists of the 1.2-litre 'PureTech' three-cylinder petrol turbo engine with either 110hp or 130hp, which can be had with an optional eight-speed automatic gearbox. There are also two diesel engine options; a 1.5-litre HDI unit with either 100hp or 130hp, and again the eight-speed auto is available as an option.

The top-spec GTI model retains its 263hp 1.6-litre petrol turbo engine.

We're not sure yet what the Irish Peugeot importer has in mind for the 308, but we'll keep you posted when we get a better idea of prices and specs.
