Mercedes-AMG GT four-door gains new ’43’ entry-level version.

We know what you're thinking. You're thinking 'why should I, an Irish car buyer, care about an update to a hyper-expensive AMG Mercedes that I'm never going to buy?' Well, dear reader and or car buyer, you should care about the updated AMG GT four-door because Mercedes is making it a little less hyper-expensive and a little more hyper-attainable.

Turbo straight-six

Joining the existing AMG GT 63 four-door is a new AMG GT 43 version, that ditches the old V6 engine and gains a new turbocharged straight-six engine. We're not yet sure if this version will come to Ireland - the 63 V8 version isn't officially on the Irish price lists and, hitherto, the old V6 43 version, and the 53 hybrid version, haven't come to the UK market so you can't even import them.

The twin-turbo straight-six is a 3.0-litre unit, with 367hp and 500Nm of torque (a little more power and identical torque to, for instance, the BMW 840i Gran Coupe). Hardly junior, is it? There's also a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which at low speeds can deliver an extra kick of 21hp and 250Nm (!) when you need it. 4MATIC+ four-wheel drive is available, and a nine-speed automatic transmission is standard.

0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds

Merc estimates a 0-100km/h in around 4.8 seconds, and quotes official fuel economy of 8.3 litres per 100km, and CO2 emissions of 189g/km with the four-wheel drive version being a little thirstier and dirtier.

MBUX digital dashboard

Inside, the AMG GT now comes with the big MBUX digital instrument and giant touchscreen setup as standard. That features hard-disc-based navigation and the 'Hey, Mercedes' digital voice control assistant. Augmented reality navigation (which superimposes big arrows onto live images from the car's parking cameras) is available as an option.

Mercedes also says that: "The car's practical appeal can be enhanced further by the addition of the optional basic carriers for roof attachments" but frankly if you're buying a roof-box for an AMG GT, you've bought the wrong car.
