Second-gen sports saloon from Porsche will have ‘more power’, according to VP for Panamera.

Porsche is readying the updated version of the second-generation '971 G2' Panamera for market, which is scheduled for a full world premiere at the end of this month.

More power

Visually, it's hard to discern any key differences with the 'G2 II' as Porsche is dubbing this updated Panamera, although the shots show lightly camouflaged versions of the mighty Turbo model and there could be aesthetic updates that will be soon revealed.

So, instead, it's over to Thomas Friemuth, vice-president of product line for the Panamera family, who says: "The Panamera has always been both an exclusive touring saloon and a true sports car at the same time. In the new model, we have enhanced these even more. Alongside the increased engine power, improvements have been made in the areas of cornering stability, body control and steering precision. These enhancements benefit both everyday comfort and performance."

Bespoke Michelin rubber

Of course, with talk of increased power - raising the tantalising possibility that the bonkers Turbo S E-Hybrid model might go beyond 700hp - there has to be some sort of Nürburgring Nordschleife connection, right? And there is. Porsche has put its discreetly disguised Panamera Turbo G2 II, rated as a 'series production car', around the 'Green Hell' in the hands of test driver Lars Kern. It recorded a time of 7:29.81, which is apparently a new lap record in the 'executive cars' category. And it's also 13 seconds quicker than the same driver went in the current 550hp Pan Turbo, four years ago ahead of its launch.

Talking of the lap record, Kern said: "The enhancements made to the chassis and the powertrain of the new Panamera were always noticeable during this lap on what is recognised as the most demanding race track in the world. In the Hatzenbach or also Bergwerk and Kesselchen sections in particular, the new set-up of the electromechanical roll stabilisation system remains consistently effective and provides the Panamera with incredible stability in spite of the bumpy track surface. At Schwedenkreuz, the car benefited from the improved lateral dynamics and the increased grip of the new Michelin sports tyres. I achieved cornering speeds there that I would not have believed possible with the Panamera."

The interesting bit there is the section about the sports tyres. Porsche says the Panamera has a compound of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber that has been developed especially for the big saloon - and used for the lap record. These tyres will, according to the German firm, be optionally available after the updated car's market launch.
