Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid said to be the ‘most capable ever’.

Jeep has shown off its plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe (pronounced four-by-e, apparently, though we doubt many people will follow Jeep's instructions in that regard), bringing its plug-in hybrid range to three, alongside the Compass and Renegade.

2.0-litre turbo engine plus electric motors

The Wrangler 4xe's powertrain starts with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, and adds to that two electric motors - one nestled up between the engine and the gearbox, and one integrated into the eight-speed auto gearbox itself. There's a 17kWh rechargeable battery, and when that's fully charged Jeep claims an electric range of some 40km (although that's on the US test cycle - the European one could throw up some different figures).

The motor mounted to the engine is essentially a replacement for the old alternator, while the motor in the gearbox replaces the conventional torque convertor. A pair of clutches carefully divides and parcels out power from the engine and the starter/generator motor, while a third e-clutch controls the gearbox motor, depending on what the driver asks for.

The battery pack is mounted under the Wrangler's back seats, and those seats can be flipped forward to open the compartment so that the battery can be serviced when needed. Otherwise, it's pretty tightly sealed-in so that the Wrangler can get on with its expected rock-bashing and river-wading. The battery is water-cooled, and even gets its own refrigeration system to keep it ultra-cool in hot conditions.

Thanks to careful waterproofing of all the electrical components, the Wrangler has a rated wading depth of 76cm.

Driving modes

As usual with plug-in hybrids, the Wrangler 4xe has a number of driving modes. Hybrid mode is the default, blending power from the engine and battery according to need. Electric mode speaks for itself, and only wakes up the engine when the battery is drained, or if the driver asks for maximum acceleration. eSave mode allows you to charge the battery up when driving, for later use in an urban area (or for some really, really quiet off-roading).

There's a regenerative braking system, of course, and also a function in the Wrangler's uConnect infotainment system that monitors your energy use and gives you hints and tips as to how to maximise the Wrangler's electric running.

Jeep reckons that the instant torque of the electric motors can actually make for more precise off-roading, and that the lack of engine noise "allows occupants to focus solely on the sights and full sounds of nature."

There will be three distinct models of the Wrangler 4xe: 4xe, Sahara 4xe and Rubicon 4xe. Wrangler 4xe and Wrangler Sahara 4xe models are equipped with full-time 4x4 systems, front and rear next-generation solid Dana 44 axles and are fitted with the Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. The intuitive system allows the driver to set it and forget it in any environment. An available Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential provides extra grip and capability in low-traction situations, such as driving over sand, gravel, snow or ice.

Hardcore Rubicon model

The more hardcore Wrangler Rubicon 4xe models carry the Rock-Trac 4x4 system that includes a two-speed transfer case with a 4:1 low-range gear ratio, full-time 4x4, front and rear solid Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lok electric front- and rear-axle lockers. The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe has an impressive crawl ratio of 77.2:1, for maximum low-speed control. Wrangler Rubicon models also offer improved articulation and total suspension travel with help from a front axle, electronic anti-roll-bar disconnect.

The Wrangler 4xe includes Selec-Speed Control with Hill-ascent and Hill-descent Control. This allows drivers to control vehicle speed up and down steep, rugged inclines with the transmission shift lever.

The Rubicon model has impressive off-roading credentials with an approach angle of 44 degrees, breakover angle of 22.5 degrees, departure angle of 35.6 degrees and ground clearance of 10.8 inches (27.4cm) (according to US-specifications)

You'll spot the 4xe Wrangler, compared to its conventional brothers, from the 'electric blue' detailing, such as the front and rear tow hooks, the Jeep badge, and the 'Trail Rated' badge. There's also blue stitching inside, and a choice of ten paint options: Black, Bright White, Firecracker Red, Granite Crystal Metallic, Hella Yella, Hydro Blue, Sting-Gray, Snazzberry, Sarge and Billet Silver Metallic. Two interior options (Black and Heritage Tan cloth/ Black and Dark Saddle leather) are available.

Needless to say, there will be a positive army of official accessories and off-road enhancements for the Wrangler 4xe, some 300 in all from Jeep's Mopar aftermarket operations. Those range from special wheels to LED off-roading lights, to a home-mounted wall charger.

"Our Jeep 4xe vehicles will be the most efficient, responsible and capable that the brand has ever created," said Christian Meunier, Global President of Jeep Brand - FCA. "We are committed to make Jeep the greenest SUV brand. The electrification of the Jeep lineup will allow commuters to travel solely on electric power, delivering an efficient and fun on-road experience and offering an ability to enjoy even more Jeep capability off-road in nearly complete silence."
