The all-electric MG Cyberster concept will be shown at the Shanghai motor show.

We've seen the sketches, and now here are the first photos of the new MG Cyberster, an electric concept car that it's hoped will lead to the first proper all-new MG sports car since the MG F of 1995.

800km claimed range

Set to be shown off at the Shanghai motor show later this month, the Cyberster (yeah, we know - really awkward name) sits on an all-new electric car platform, and MG is talking about a one-charge range of 800km and a 0-100km/h time of less than three seconds. That would, by some margin, make it the quickest non-racing MG of all time.

Laser belt of LEDs

According to MG, the Cyberster draws "a number of styling cues from the classic MGB Roadster" (which to be honest, we can't see) and also introduces some cutting edge tech, such as 5G connectivity built-in to the dashboard, and clever LED lights that seem to 'open' as you switch them on, like eyes. There's also a 'laser belt' strip of LEDs down the side of the car that emphasises its fast, flowing shape and runs around the outline of the door.

Inside, there's a chopped-off steering wheel, LED instruments, and a dramatic spine that flows down from the dash-top and bisects the two-seat cabin.

Kamm tail

Other nice design touches are the flat, very aero-friendly 'Kamm' tail, the 'hacker blade' (MG's words, not ours) alloy wheel shapes, and the rear LED lights that are meant to mimic the shape of the Union Flag, emphasising MG's British heritage - even if the brand is entirely owned by the Chinese SAIC conglomerate, and all its cars are now built in China.

Mind you, they are designed in the UK, and Carl Gotham, Director of SAIC Design Advanced London, said: "The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into MG's future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our technology and advanced design. Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us."
