Sports car maker Aston Martin has revealed a new high-performance version of its DBX luxury SUV. The new Aston Martin DBX707 is named as such to signify its uprated 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, which now produces up to 707hp and 900Nm of torque. Aston Martin claims that the new model is the most powerful luxury SUV on sale, but there's much more to the DBX707 than simply big numbers from the engine.
Comprehensive upgrades
The Mercedes-AMG-sourced twin-turbo V8 features new turbochargers and a unique engine map to deliver the extra power, while a new nine-speed automatic gearbox has been fitted, replacing the standard DBX's traditional torque converter auto. The nine-speed transmission is the same one found in Mercedes-AMG E 63 S and is designed to deliver improved response. As a result, the DBX707 is capable of 0-100km/h in 3.3 seconds.
A stronger electronic limited-slip rear differential has been added to cope with the extra torque.
As before, four-wheel drive is standard, and the system is fully automatic, so it can send power to the wheels with the most grip, while there's the ability to send up to 100 per cent of torque to the rear wheels on demand. The air suspension has also been optimised for the DBX707, with new damping and a recalibrated active roll control system, while the steering has also been revised.
Stopping power comes from standard-fit carbon ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers. A new calibration for the pedal is designed to improve response, while replacing the steel discs with carbon ceramic items helps to reduce the car's unsprung weight by 40.5kg.
The DBX707 has a set of bespoke Dynamic Drive modes, too. There's now a Race Start option available in the GT Sport and Sport+ drive settings, which optimises the car for full-throttle launches.
Style makeover
As well as a range of chassis upgrades, the DBX707 has also been given a distinctive new look. There's an enlarged grille up front, a new daytime running light design and extra air intakes to feed air to the engine, gearbox and brakes. Dark satin chrome is used on the nose, while there's a similar treatment for the bonnet vents and window surrounds.
The DBX707 comes with 22-inch wheels in two designs as standard, but 23-inch rims are also offered, and are said to improve the car's responses further. The door sills are redesigned in gloss black, while a new tailgate spoiler is designed to reduce lift at high speeds. Finally, a new rear bumper with an enlarged diffuser is designed to make space for the revised quad-exit exhaust.
Inside, electric sports seats finished in Alcantara are fitted as standard, while the exterior's dark chrome theme continues in the switchgear, including a revised centre console. This now features dedicated buttons that operate the car's performance modes, so there's no need to delve into the touchscreen sub-menus to find the setting you need. As ever, Aston Martin will offer a wide range of personalisation options, while the firm's 'Q by Aston Martin' department can create a bespoke machine for customers that are particularly flush with cash.
Speaking at the DBX707's unveiling, Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, said: "When you are the alpha SUV you don't have to try too hard, therefore, we concentrated on those areas of the design that would make the DBX707 instantly recognisable as the highest performing model. Naturally, function is the driver for some of the changes - most notably the larger grille aperture, rear spoiler and optional 23-inch wheels - but elsewhere - such as the side sills and rear bumper - we expressed the DBX707's immense performance in ways that create a more aggressive stance and greater muscularity. The result is a design that exudes potency while retaining our commitment to pure lines and perfect proportions. DBX707 is a true performance beast, yet retains the beauty and elegance you expect from Aston Martin's DNA."
While prices haven't been confirmed, the new Aston Martin DBX707 is available to order now, with deliveries due to start in the spring.
