Volvo is introducing some additions to its electric C40 and XC40 Recharge model line-ups. Specifically, it's introducing single-motor, front-wheel-drive versions to augment the two-motor, four-wheel-drive cars that are already on sale.

Less power, slightly less range

The power output falls from 408hp for the four-wheel-drive models to 229hp for these new front-drive variants. The front-drive versions also get a slightly smaller battery - 69kWh compared to the 78kWh battery in the two-motor versions - which gives them a one-charge range on the WLTP cycle of 434km. That's just 10km less than what you get in the two-motor C40 or XC40. The battery can be fast-charged to 80 per cent power in just 32 minutes if you can find a sufficiently powerful charging point.

High-tech headlights

The XC40 also gets a slight redesign of its blanked-off grille, which brings it more into line with the styling of the lower-roofed C40. There's a new bumper, too, and the option of leather-free upholstery inside, alongside some new alloy wheel and colour options from which to choose. Meanwhile, the 'Thor's Hammer' headlights get updated with new 'Pixel' LED tech, enabling them to automatically adapt to traffic in front and efficiently light up the road ahead without dazzling other drivers.

"As we move towards becoming a fully electric company, our design language follows," said Robin Page, Head of Design at Volvo Cars. "With the refreshed fully electric XC40, we continue to evolve its instantly recognisable design, creating a more modern face with a sleeker front and an even more integrated grille."

Qualifies for SEAI grants

In Ireland, the C40 Recharge starts at €58,750 (before SEAI grant deduction), while the XC40 Recharge starts at €57,130 (again, before SEAI grant deduction). Both the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge are eligible for the SEAI Grant bringing the starting price to the customer to €53,750 and €52,130, respectively.
