Peugeot has announced that every model in its range will be sold with the option of an electrified powertrain (hybrid or battery-electric) from 2023, as well as announcing a new hybrid system to make its debut on the company's 3008 and 5008 crossover models.
Next year is set to be a big year for the firm's electrification plans with not just the new hybrid models but also the launch of the new E-308, whose SW estate variant will be one of only a small number of electric estates on the market. Another electric Peugeot is on the way, too, in the form of the E-408, which will follow next year's launch of the company's new niche-busting 408 fastback, though it's not clear just yet when exactly the battery-only model will arrive.
The aim of Peugeot's electric drive, the firm said, is to offer electric mobility in every segment of the market, from its electric bicycles and scooters to the e-208 supermini to MPVs such as the e-Rifter to full-sized vans such as the e-Boxer.
New hybrid systems
Before it's rolled out to the wider Stellantis group, Peugeot's 3008 and 5008 will see the addition of a new hybrid system to their respective ranges. While the 3008 is already sold with a plug-in hybrid option, the new full hybrid powertrain will combine a 136hp petrol engine with a 48-volt battery system for extra torque at low revs, a reduction in fuel consumption by about 15 per cent and around a kilometre of electric-only driving at low speeds.
While there are definitely fully electric versions of the 3008 and 5008 on the way at some point in the future, details remain relatively scarce and, for now, a hybrid version of the 5008 will be a welcome addition to a range which has so far been either entirely petrol- or diesel-powered.
More power for the e-208
Having been on the market since for a couple of years, the Peugeot e-208 supermini is also due a round of upgrades. One change is its name: that "e" will become a capital letter marking a departure from the rest of Peugeot's electric naming conventions and following in the footsteps of the E-308.
The biggest change, however, is the fact that the E-208 will receive the electric motor from the E-308, boosting its power by 15 per cent from 136hp to 156hp. Energy efficiency has been optimised, too, which provides, according to Peugeot, a 10.5 per cent increase in range which translates to around 38km bringing the E-208's combined WLTP range to 400km (pending approval).
