Four years and 150,000 sales later, Audi is renaming and revamping its first-ever electric car, the e-tron. From 2023 the firm's range-topping EV will be badged the Q8 e-tron. It will be available in SUV and Sportback body styles as before and the high-performance model will now be known as the SQ8 e-tron. Just as importantly, there have been improvements made to the electrical system to enhance the ownership experience. First deliveries in Ireland are expected before the summer and prices start at €86,400.
Longer range, faster charging
Audi has worked on increasing the range of the Q8 e-tron, while offering faster recharging. The entry-level model, the Q8 e-tron 50, gets the same 89kWh (usable) energy capacity as the previous-generation e-tron 55, while the new Q8 e-tron 55 features a new 106kWh (usable) battery pack. The WLTP range for these models has been confirmed as 505- and 600km, respectively. Changes to the rear motor are claimed to contribute to an overall increase in efficiency.
Those figures are achieved by the Sportback variant in each case, as it creates the least aerodynamic drag. While the Q8 e-tron 50 can charge at up to 150kW on a DC rapid charger, the Q8 e-tron 55's battery can be recharged at up to 170kW, allowing a 10-80 per cent charge in as little as 31 minutes. An 11kW AC charger is standard, with the option to upgrade to a 22kW item.
In terms of output, the Q8 e-tron 50's two motors generate up to 340hp and 664Nm of torque, while the Q8 e-tron 55 has up to 408hp - and the same maximum torque figure.
All models feature four-wheel drive and air suspension. Audi says it has modified the latter, along with the stability control, variable-ratio steering system and even some physical suspension components, all in a bid to better balance comfort and agility.
SQ8 takes over from e-tron S
Replacing the e-tron S in the line-up is the new SQ8 e-tron, again available in SUV and Sportback body shapes. It features three electric motors - one each for the rear wheels and one for the front axle - for up to 503hp and 973Nm of torque. It gets the same 106kWh battery as the '55' model - with 170kW DC charging capability - for an official range of up to 474 kilometres.
New badge, new face
The new Q8 badge is joined by Audi's restyled four rings on the outside of the car, along with new model name badging on the B-pillars. There are new colours and wheels and a restyled grille up front. That hides a "self-sealing" system that augments the existing electric shutters - in the name of reduced drag through the air - while new or larger wheel spoilers (depending on model) can be seen ahead of the wheels underneath the car for the same purpose.
