Battery and motor upgrades push Citroen e-C4 and e-C4 X over 400km.

Citroen has confirmed that the electric e-C4 and e-C4 X will get the same battery and electric motor upgrades as the rest of the compact Peugeot and Opel lineups, giving them greater efficiency and more range on one charge.

54kWh battery

Both models will be getting the same 54kWh battery pack and 156hp (115kW) electric motor that we've already seen in the Jeep Avenger, the Peugeot e-2008, which is coming shortly to the fully-electric Opel Astra-e and Peugeot e-308.

The increase in battery capacity and the greater efficiency of the more powerful electric motor means that both the ë-C4 and ë-C4 X will be able to top 420km on a single charge, an increase of 70km compared to the 50kWh models with the 136hp electric motor.

Small battery versions staying on sale

The smaller battery versions with the lower power motor will stay on sale alongside the bigger-battery, longer-range models as Citroën is keen to keep a low entry-level price for its two key electric models.

As with the other Stellantis Group models that have received the new battery, the ë-C4 and ë-C4 X will also now come with a heat-pump heating system as standard, which means that both models claim average electric consumption of just 12kWh/100km. It helps that both cars are also relatively low-slung and aerodynamic and come with specially-designed 18-inch tyres with low rolling resistance and an A+ environmental rating.

Petrol and diesel power too?

In the UK market, the C4 X will, for the first time, be sold with the option of petrol and diesel powertrains too - the C4 X had previously launched as an electric-only model, but Citroën says that demand from fleet operators, in particular, has pushed it to include combustion cars. It's not yet confirmed whether this will also be true for Ireland.

Production of the upgraded electric ë-C4 and ë-C4 X will begin in July, suggesting that the first cars should arrive here in August or September.
