All-electric Lamborghini mixes sporty looks with a crossover stance.

Monterey Car Week in California saw the unveiling of the Lamborghini Lanzador concept, a 2+2 GT that previews the Italian supercar maker's first all-electric model. It's set to share its platform with an all-electric replacement of the Lamborghini Urus SUV, although the Lanzador isn't scheduled to hit showrooms until 2028.

The Lanzador has familiar Lamborghini styling cues, with slender light units and a smooth nose, plus narrow, wide-set taillights inspired by the Countach's, but the overall shape is something different. The bodyshell is that of a low-slung two-door, four-seat coupe with a cab-forward design, but the raised ride height means there's also an element of SUV about it. According to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann the concept ushers in a new category, the 'ultra GT', and it's "poised to offer customers a new and unparalleled driving experience, one that's quintessentially Lamborghini, thanks to groundbreaking technologies."

All-new platform

Under the skin, the Lanzador is based on a new Volkswagen Group platform called SSP Sport. This will also be used by the electric Urus, as well as the next generation of the Porsche Taycan and Panamera. For the Lanzador there's a two-motor set-up - one on each axle - for four-wheel drive, while the only power figure that Lamborghini has confirmed is a peak that's in excess of one megawatt - or 1360hp - no other performance or charging stats have been confirmed.

Buttons on the multifunction steering wheel allow the driver to adjust the car's power delivery, while a new version of the company's LDVI (Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata) control system allows drivers to change the set-up to suit different conditions. Rear-wheel steering, air suspension and active aerodynamics are also included.

2+2 interior

Inside, the Lanzador features a 2+2 layout, a configuration that hasn't been used by a Lamborghini since the 1970s in the Jarama, Espada and Urraco sports cars. Here, the Lanzador features a layout that's designed to make the driver and passenger "feel like a pilot", with low-slung seating positions and plenty of tech ahead of them. A central spine splits the cockpit in two, while digital displays feature ahead of the driver.

In another break from tradition, the car's interior features lots of sustainable and recycled materials. Merino wool upholstery covers the four seats, while regenerated carbon-fibre composite is also used, and the seat padding and other hidden plastic elements are made from 3D printed recycled fibres.

With an on-sale date sometime in 2028, there's plenty of time for Lamborghini to finalise the spec of its new ultra GT. Since the car will share running gear with the Urus, it's much more likely to make production than past four-seat performance models. The Estoque four-door performance saloon concept was revealed to widespread acclaim in 2008, but at the time its unique front-engined, four-wheel-drive layout made it hard to justify its production.
